10 Natural Weight Loss Tips

The wrong diet, habits and lifestyle, incompatible food combinations, seasonal changes and stress factors all combine to alter the balance of the body’s tissues which can result in ill health and the inability  for weight loss.

Here are ten tips for weight loss to keep you looking and feeling your best, following natural and healthy Ayurvedic principles.

Regular eating patterns
Are essential for optimum health and wellbeing. However Ayurveda also recommends fasting for one day once a fortnight to allow the bodies systems to have a rest which will help to regularise the metabolism. On the day of your fast simply drink sufficient water to keep you fully hydrated and freshly squeezed fruit juices and honey water on the day of your fast. Try to eat pure, fresh foods and avoid canned or processed foods that contain additives and chemical preservatives

Sleep
Regular quality sleep at night is vital to keep our biological rhythms in balance. In order to sleep well it is important to avoid doing either too much and equally too little. Doctors including those at Harvard and New York University’s School of Medicine have found that sleep is good for many reasons like mood, appetite, immunity including weight loss – The hormones Leptin and Ghrelin influence appetite, Ghrelin stimulates appetite, which makes one hungry, and Leptin suppresses it, which tells the brain that you are full. A lack of sleep causes a fall in Leptin levels and a rise in Ghrelin levels; therefore, the brain will constantly be telling body that you are not full which, in turn, makes one eat more and gain weight.
It is also essential to avoid sleeping in the day as this has the effect of slowing down the body’s metabolism which in turn will discourage weight loss.

Boost metabolism with herbs and spices
Ayurveda emphasises the use of Herbs like Triphala and Guggulu in managing weight. Triphala is a composite herbal powder containing fruits of three myrobalans Emblica officinalis, Terminalia chebula and Terminalia bellirica. Triphala when taken with honey and water takes care of the whole body gently promoting internal cleansing and regularising body metabolism allowing the person to feel pure, light and revitalised. Studies have shown that Triphala plays an important role as an effective cardio protector by reducing bad cholesterol (LDL) and improving good cholesterol (HDL). Guggulu is another strong purifying herb as certain studies show having lipid regulating properties. Guggulu is a safe natural plant extract and highly beneficial not only in reducing the excess body weight but also to lower bad cholesterol like Triglycerides and improving the HDL and LDL ratio. Guggulu’s benefits as a weight loss and fat burning agent have been well researched and documented.
Ayurveda also recommends using spices which have cleansing and anti lipid activities like Turmeric, Ginger, and Cardamom. Fenugreek seeds soaked overnight in water consumed in the morning not only helps to regulate fat but glucose metabolism as well. Ayurveda also speaks highly of the benefits of Honey as part of a weight loss regimen.

Eat fresh fruits
Fresh fruits are important because they provide rich natural source of energy essential to balance energy needs of the body. It is advisable to snack on fruits than any junk savoury.

Honey water in the morning
Honey is highly recommended in Ayurveda helping to reduce body weight by providing slow and sustainable carbohydrate/sugar needs of the body. A teaspoonful of honey in a glass of water is a good start for the day helping to reduce the undue appetite.

Flaxseed Oil
Flax seeds are a great source of fibre and contain omega-3 fat and they work well in lowering cholesterol and they are also a good source of magnesium. It also improves the quality of hair, nails, and skin, as well as helping you to lose weight or bulk up, and it lowers cholesterol, blood pressure and prevents arthritis and cancers. Flax seeds also help the digestive system creating an ease of bowel movement combating constipation. Recent research indicates that flaxseed may have the ability to reduce blood pressure, lower level of harmful cholesterol, offer both estrogen-like and anti-estrogenic effects, and is being studied for its ability to protect against cancer.

Body brush
Body brushing is a form of body treatment explained in Ayurveda as Udvartana that is stimulating and keeping the better lymphatic and blood circulation in turn helping to maintain better body weight.

Avoid stress
Stress is a major factor in causing illness try to avoid stress by creating the right ambience as this is the key to relaxation. Try self massage using sesame or Almond oil before a bath to keep the body warm and energised. Regular vigorous exercise also helps to combat stress. Try swimming, yoga and Pilates.

Always eat breakfast
Breakfast helps to kick start body metabolism and ultimately helps to maintain a healthier energy levels and body weight.

Eat easily digestible food
This will help the metabolism try to avoid eating late, deep fried and cold food and beverages instead of cold drinks try warming herbal teas containing ginger, liquorice cardamom peppermint sage or basil. Try to reduce dairy, cheese, red meat shell fish, mushroom and of course moderate your intake of alcohol.
