Did you know? The concept of afternoon tea was originally created by Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, who lived in the early 1800s.
Whilst an extra meal was taken between to fill the midday gap between breakfast and the evening, this ‘luncheon’ was much more of a simple affair and the long afternoon would stretch endlessly until dinner was eaten after eight. Anna found that a light repast of tea, small cakes and sandwiches filled that gap and the Duchess soon began inviting her friends to join her for refreshments and catching up on society’s news. Thus afternoon tea quickly became an established and companionable time in many middle and upper class households and is now a wonderful tradition of note.
